2015 Halloween Pick: Through The Woods by Emily Carroll

"It came from the woods. Most strange things do."

I was searching through books I could read a few weeks ago (even though I was already reading something else—you feel me?) and somehow stumbled upon Emily Carroll’s “Through The Woods.” I was supposed to make a book review for it, but then again I thought meh, how about something else. And since it’ll be Halloween in three days and the comic book genre fits the occasion, I decided to feature this comic book as my Halloween pick for this year.

Published on July 2014 by Margaret K. McElderry Books, Through The Woods is a graphic novel featuring 5 “terrifying short stories” by Emily Carroll herself, namely “Our Neighbor’s House,” “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold,” “His Face All Red,” “My Friend Janna” and “The Nesting Place.”

My favorite would most probably be “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold.” The story is like one of a fairy tale. It features a short song that gave me chills every time I read it, and I basically love the plot itself. I would love to explain why, but it would be hard to do so without giving away the really good spoiler, so you’d just have to read it for yourself.

All the other shorts give their own fair share of frights as well. The art from “The Nesting Place” gave me a scare for a second or two once I reached that one specific page. You might also find the ending of “His Face All Red” really creepy once you understand and digest what just happened (embarrassing as it is, I almost didn’t understand it until my sister—who read it with me—pointed it out to me). “Our Neighbor’s House,” inspired by the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, is a good start for the book, though “My Friend Janna” would have to be my least favorite pick since it didn’t scare me all that much.

Overall, Through The Woods is a good pick if you want to give yourself a short scare for Halloween this year. If I were to rate it, I’d give it 5 stars all in all.
